On January 19, 2008, the Denver Elks held its annual Western Night, which is a fund raiser for the Colorado Special Olympics. As a result of this, the Denver lodge raised $1500.00 and the Colorado State Elks Association contributed matching funds to make a total of $3000.00!
The Denver Elks have raised over $20,000.00 over the past ten years, which is something to be very proud of, and for which the Olympics is very grateful.
On March 2nd and 3rd, 2008, the Winter Games State competition for the Colorado Special Olympics was held at Copper Mountain. Jeannie McManus, daughter of Jerry and Virginia McManus, competed in cross-country skiing and she earned a Gold medal for the 500K and a Silver for the 1000K events.
This made Jeannie very happy and proud of her accomplishment, which was a boost for her self-esteem.
During that event there was a dinner for the families of the athletes and Jerry was able to present the president of "SOCO," Mindy Watrous, with the check for $3000.00. She then announced the Elks contribution to the crowd so that their contribution could be acknowledged and she thanked the Elks for their long time support.
On March 6th, Mr. Mac Macsouits, Director of Development with Special Olympics, addressed the floor of the Lodge to again thank them for the $3000.00 and for their long-term support.
