With wildfire season on the horizon, the Aurora History Museum will open a new exhibit in April that explores the topic of wildfires and features assorted gear used by emergency responders.

"Wildfire!," on display from April 6 to July 11, will examine the causes of wildfire, why fire is good for nature, how to prevent wildfire and the people who fight wildland fires. Admission is free.

A three-dimensional display will illustrate what it's like in the field during a forest fire and describe a day in the life of a wildland firefighter. Other gear and tools will be on display as well, and historic PSAs featuring Smokey Bear and other celebrities will be available to view. Also, learn about Colorado's first female fire lookout ranger and the man behind the Pulaski Tool, one of a firefighter's most versatile hand tools.

Exhibit artifacts, materials and information are on loan from Colorado Wildland Fire & Incident Management Academy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the Aurora Fire Department's Wildland Division.

An event for all ages titled "Fire!" will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. April 17 at the museum. The event, which is $1 for Aurora residents and $2 for non-residents, will feature a discussion about fire safety and prevention, a chance to meet a firefighter and try on equipment, and a chance to meet Smokey Bear.

The Aurora History Museum is a service of the City of Aurora's Cultural Services Division. The museum at 15051 E.
