One cloudless Saturday morning I skedaddled up to the Mondo cafe on 33rd and Tejon to indulge in one of their scrumptious everything bagels, toasted with egg, cheese and tomato...
After the first bite I developed a girl crush on the woman behind the counter who had tattooed eyebrows...
I became very close with Mondo's homemade pastries, fresh espresso, tasty bagel sandwiches, and slick décor. I often frolicked to Mondo when guests were in town, or when I wanted a romantic morning with my man on the cafe's patio.
Earlier this summer I got my first bike since my pink and purple huffy with a bag connected to the front. This was a big deal to me and I rode it everywhere. One exciting Saturday morning, I slithered on my spandex shorts, clicked on my helmet and raced myself to Mondo. My race came to a screeching halt when I found Mondo closed! With brown paper on the inside! With a sign that said something like, "Closed for remodeling, go to Einstein's!" (I made up that last part.) I looked around in horror... What was I to do? Nobody was around.... Was I the only one that didn't know? No old fat dogs tied to the gate outside, no screaming kids pointing at the pastry's, no single hotties at the counter using the free wireless... and most importantly, no everything bagels in sight. Where did everyone and everything go?
There was no need for remodeling! The decor was sleek IKEA and the cafe even had a bar... What do you mean remodeling?
So, it was closed all summer... The best season for a cafe and they were closed! I never saw workers there; I never saw a new sign.... And still it remains, closed.
What happened to Mondo Cafe?
