Man, that ain't right
Contributed by: jon bowman on 8/9/2006

Ok. The political season is upon us. Did you vote? You probably didn't. I'm just saying. The voting process is a sad situation. We formed this nation based on the principal of "one man, one vote". Sorry to say that meant 1-man. Not one woman, one Black, one Native American...rather one land owning anglo man.

Ok. With that said here is what I would like to mention.

In 2000, the City of Denver made new council districts. No big deal you say. Oh how wrong you are.

The civics lesson: In Denver there are 13 Councilors. Two are At-Large, the other 11 are have a specific area they represent.

Ok. With Denver growing for the first time since the Poundstone Amendment banned any land take-overs by the City, it is clear that even boundaries drawn in 2000 are faulty.

For instance, in Park Hill, Stapleton, Green Valley, Gateway, Montbello and Park Field we have one Councilor.

Now in 2003, the average population in each district was about 40-thousand or so. With so much growth in Lowry, Stapleton, GVR and points east, our district has grown way big. That is political talk.

Before the last election, a former Mayor decided to help several Councilors get elected. To do that they cut the heart out of one of the best--no check it--the best neighborhood in the City...Park Hill.

While our border was Colorado and Colfax, northeast to DIA, with one Councilor, now we have three plus two ALC--at-large-councilors.

What has that meant. Well since Districts 5, 8, and 11 have much in common, they also have much that is different.

But in an effort to get hand-picked people elected, the Park Hill neighborhood was broken into three Council Districts. Is that a bad thing?

Ask the folks who are trying to fight scrape-offs. Or get issues resolved anywhere but Montbello and GVR.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Most who voted in 03 had no idea that their neighborhood had been divided thusly.

The southwest border... from Colorado & Colfax to 23rd & Holly... cutting off most of Histroic Park Hill--consistent voters to be sure...
On the south... from Colfax to 23rd Avenue...
Leaving the PHN split big time. Giving us Hancock, Wegworth, and Johnson plus to AL types.

Are the issues in the 'Bello and GVR similar? For sure, but are they different too? Absolutely!

Why the beef? We should push to--and population agrees--have the four Far-Northeast Neighborhoods be in a single district, while pushing for Park Hill and Stapleton be a single district as well.

Just one persons thought on it, but I know politics isn't poker on tv as sports, and its not any of the other phoo phoo kinds of issues people have. I am just letting you know what is happening in North East Denver, our home!

Oh, and by the way, why not voting to just give the people downtown we see what they are doing and this is what we think!!!
