In your story on S. R. DeBoer's cottage in your February 22 edition of Denver South, there was no mention of his home at 4426 Sheridan Blvd. According to my 1913 Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph directory, Mr. DeBoer lived at that address, which I believe is now a parking lot. His telephone number was HIckory 130. Can anyone tell us when he moved from there to his cottage on E. Iliff Ave.? I've always been curious. Jim Grisenti

Good question. S R DeBoer was working in Denver for the Parks Department as early as 1910, and lived in north Denver as you indicate. The fact that he had a telephone at the time was fairly rare, but indicated his important status. As for the move to south Denver, it took place in 1920. In that year, he began a landscape consulting partnership with Walter Pesman (who is also well known in the field). As he wrote in a memoir 52 years later, it was time for him to experience what he called a new home in an old house. "It was 1920 when our family moved into the old farm house on a five-acre tract in South Denver, under the city ditch. I had purchased the land the year before. The house is probably one of the oldest houses in South Denver. It took a lot of work to make it livable and I still work on it."
