Former Denverite becomes an author!
Contributed by: Lisa Hein on 11/26/2007

Hello, my name is Lisa Hein and I lived in Denver for over 27 years.

I was recently in Denver visiting with family and friends and was on Good Day Colorado promoting my book, THE BOOK "I'm Doing The Best I Can!" (They won't always be cute and adorable.) Stylelicious, a children's boutique in Cherry Creek North, was gracious enough to host my book signing which was held the next day!

I never dreamt about becoming an author, yet everything is going so great. My book is in 2 libraries, have had several book signings, been on media and radio, had articles written on me, have done speaking engagements and the list goes on.

THE BOOK started out being my journal. As a parent, you think you are doing a great job and that's what I thought I was doing. We were always the house that everyone came to and all the children just loved coming over. They would say, "gosh, we wish our parents were this cool!" That made me feel 'special!' I always wanted to be 'that' parent! But, as my own child became older, he did not think I was cool.

Little did I know that those thoughts and poems would be anything more than 'my feelings.' Before my eyes, a book was coming to life, chapters were being formed, and titles for each, were right there.

It was so amazing to me that I wrote words that, I am sure, other parents were feeling, and turning it into a book. It was all just so 'meant to be!' Before I knew it, my editor was setting my first 50 copies on my dining room table, and overnight I became an Author. How cool is that?

Even though the words are deep and very heartfelt, the story in each chapter is meant to help others going through similar situations, or have just started their journey with a toddler. THE BOOK is meant for all ages and all situtations. Preparing for those 'teenage years' starts at age 1.

It's not just about our children's behavior, but ours, the parents! We are responsible for being the parent, not the friend. We are to make sound judgment calls, about what time is bedtime, what time is curfew, and we must stay consistent. When we are consistent, and we set the boundaries, our children will become stable, young people rather than self -absorbed monsters, thinking that they are "entitled" to everything we have. It is important that children feel involved in what they want.

Many parents are so busy today that they feel they must give their child every new game and gadget. It is not necessary, nor is it appropriate. Our children are so inundated with so much pressure through television, music and their friends, that if we don't stop 'giving' them everything, they will lose their own identity and become just like everyone else... which is a parent's nightmare!

Lisa, As an aspiring poet myself, I'm so happy for you! It must be such a great feeling to know that people are willing to even read your work, much less buy it! I'm not at all sure that will happen for me. I wish you the best for your career and your future. Rose West Ekerholm
