Inspired by her successful horse rescue, and motivated by the launch of the blog she created about it, Denver writer Katharine Swan has pledged to help horses in any way she can.

One of these ways is to donate to horse-related charities, such as horse rescues. Ms. Swan has pledged to donate 25 percent of her income from new clients in April, as part of her efforts to "give back to horses."

"It felt good to know that I had saved my horse from any more needless suffering," Ms. Swan said. "It's inspired me to do what I can to help other horses in similar situations."

Ms. Swan first met her horse, Panama, in the aftermath of a horrible trailer accident caused by negligence "bordering on abusive," Ms. Swan said. As a result of the accident, the 11-month-old colt's pregnant mother was euthanized, and Panama was abandoned at the veterinarian's office.

Nearly two years later, Panama is thriving, now that he has access to a loving environment and much-needed training. Her near-daily stories of Panama's escapades led to the creation of PonyTalesBlog.com in late March.

"I was blogging about him a lot on my writer's blog," Ms. Swan said. "After a while, I started to think, 'What if I made this into its own blog?'"

The new blog was an instant hit among her regular readers. Inspired by its success, not to mention the wealth of material, Ms. Swan decided to celebrate the blog's launch by helping other horses in need. Throughout the month of April, she will donate 25 percent of all new-client income to a Colorado horse rescue of her choice.

"There are so many unwanted and uncared-for horses. It really breaks my heart every time I read about it," Ms. Swan said. "I can't save all of them, but this way, I can at least help."
