Turning the world around one song at a time
Contributed by: Chris Sealy on 9/26/2007

The people behind Colorado's annual interfaith music festival want to do more than put on a good concert on October 14 - they want to turn the world around, one song at a time.

"In a time when society encourages us to create divisions between cultures, interfaith work brings people together, breaks down divisions, and introduces us to one another," says Artistic Director Keith Arnold, Minister of Music at Jefferson Unitarian Church. In the words of a Harry Belafonte song, "Do I know you who you are? Do you know who I am? See we one another clearly? Turn the world around!"

Sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado (TIA-CO), the concert features singers and musicians from many of the world's sacred traditions. The music ranges from the rollicking Jewish world fusion of Los Lantzmun and soulful American spirituals to mesmerizing Morrocan melodies played by oud master Rachid Halihal and Hindu chants from Boulder's Alandi Ashram.

Some of the festival artists have long histories of interfaith work.Jewish composer Sheldon Sands of Boulder, who's worked for the last 12 years with Arabic musicians, has composed a song of peace to be performed by a large Unitarian Universalist choir and all the other music festival participants.

One of several returning groups is the Sojourners, an ensemble from the Spirituals Project.Sojourners singer Marta Burton, who takes over next year as the festival's artistic director, is passionate about the power of music to open people's hearts."I love working with diverse artists and musicians to create community. It is thrilling to me to bring talented, passionate people together to create something new, beautiful and transformational."

The concert will be held at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia, on Sunday evening, October 14 th, 7 p.m.

Tickets are available online at www.interfaithallianceco.org, at the TIA-CO office, 720-524-1100, or at any King Soopers. The suggested donation is $12.TIA-CO's mission is to be a voice for freedom of religion and against extremism, intolerance and violence.
