Farewell
Contributed by: Robert Richard on 11/29/2007

I bid you farewell my love
your path stops here,
you in yonder world
and I to continue.

A kiss to you my love,
your ash returned to earth
calm and still.
It is distant for us now.

Happy memories weigh
heavy sadness in my heart.
Already you are missed, and
I summon the courage to leave.

Are we finished?
Can more be said of our many years together?
Can care and love continue?
My mouth stands firm to say, "yes,"
but I am helpless to know the future.

I go now to be alone with-out you,
to make warm our bed,
taking in the last of your fading scent
and to bewail added tears of sorrow.

Return I will, until whence my dying breath,
to touch this earth beholding you, and
to reminisce in the essence of your being.
Farewell my love, this day you are my everything.

It's been said that poetry has a different message and emotion for each reader. Mine was one of loss. I recently lost my husband to lung cancer, and parts of your poem brought back strong emotions...a sign of a good poem.
