Colorado Garden Show awarded a $40,000 grant toward the new $70,000 landscape project being installed at the feet of Lawrence Argent's 40-foot-tall blue bear sculpture, "I See What You Mean" at the Colorado Convention Center. The new landscape, which is replacing patches of blue grass, is expected to reduce water usage by about 70 percent once the plants have matured.
The Colorado Garden Show grant helped purchase approximately 77 new trees to fill the four plots around the bear and will count toward Mayor
John Hickenlooper
's "Mile High Million" tree goal. Several of the tree varieties are native to Colorado and will provide an assortment of color schemes in the spring and through the fall. A selection of plants and flowers are planted around the trees and the meandering flagstone path.
The landscape project is a collaboration between the Convention Center, Colorado Garden Show, city agencies such as Denver Water, and green-industry companies and was completed by July 31.
"The grant from Colorado Garden Show was key in making this landscape endeavor happen and believe it will invite people in when they visit the Convention Center," said John Adams, Convention Center general manager. "When it is complete, people who see this landscaped area and will learn more about low-flow irrigation and about water-wise planting incorporating Xeriscape principles in a very densely planted area."
"As a nonprofit, Colorado Garden Show looks to educate Coloradans and the rest of the country on water-wise principles by providing horticulture and education-related grants and scholarships around the state," said Jim Fricke, Colorado Garden Show executive director. "The Convention Center grant gives us this opportunity to not only educate the local attendees at shows like our Colorado Garden & Home Show but also the attendees of conventions that choose Denver as their destination."
