"Miss, what's this word?" " No entiendo este problema." Words in English and Spanish float through the air while children do their homework at the Zocalo After School Program. In a room full of donated books and supplies, children from the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Denver are busy working. The computer lab is up and running. After a snack and homework, often there's time for a walk to the park or a game of word Bingo. The children are supervised by a certified elementary school teacher, who is also bi-lingual, as well as volunteers from the community.
The after school program is a safe and welcoming place for the children in the neighborhood. It is also a familiar place, with familiar faces. The teacher, Sarah Aragon, has also been the director of a summer day camp program in the neighborhood for the past three years.
Many other influences pull at these neighborhood children-family struggles, violence in the neighborhood, gang activity. This program provides a positive support for families, a place where their children can just be kids.
