Contributed by: Tracy Williams on 11/7/2005

Metro State’s Aviation and Aerospace Science Department, in conjunction with Wings Over the Rockies Air and SpaceMuseum, will host the Burt Rutan Design Competition Saturday, November 12, 2005.

The competition is an out-of-the-box aerospace design contest for middle and high school students interested in aerospace and aviation. Students will use their imagination, knowledge and teamwork to solve an aerospace-based problem in a 2.5 hour period.

Burt Rutan, legendary aviation enthusiast, aerospace pioneer and designer of the record-breaking Voyager (the first airplane to circle the world non-stop without refueling in 2004) was the inspiration for this competition and will be on hand to serve as one of the judges at the event.

Doors will open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12th at the PE/Events Center on the Auraria Campus.  After an orientation and briefing, teams will be given their "Mission Brief", tools and materials to solve the problem. Each division (middle and high school) will have their own problem to solve and bank of computers to access the Internet as needed. Clues to the problems are being provided daily at http://www.spacevoyage.com/wings . First place teams will receive summer camp scholarships and internships.

Participation is free.
