Jefferson County Public Libraries Vital to School
Contributed by: Elizabeth Baugher on 8/22/2006

The beginning of a new school year is here and the Jefferson County Public Library is one of the most comprehensive back-to-school resources, offering endless possibilities for homework help, research and fun.

Many schools include a Jefferson County Public Library card on its school supply lists. For the 2006/2007 academic year, the 1,650 students at Green Mountain High School are required to have a library card to access the library's free online research databases for homework assignments.

"At Green Mountain, we believe it is the responsibility of every student to have a public library card. This is for obvious reasons, including remote access to the library's research databases in addition to the ones at the school," noted Peter Harold, head librarian at Green Mountain. "It's part of being an educated citizen in this community."

"We are constantly in touch with the schools in our communities," said Alison McCombe, head of children's information services at the Golden Library. "In doing so, we can keep abreast of what's going on in their curriculum and strive to have materials at our library that we know will assist in their learning. In May 2006, staff members from the Golden Library visited with 2,187 students at five area schools. This benefits us tremendously - the students recognize their librarian and know they have a trusted source for school work help."

Aside from the print and media collection, the Jefferson County Public Library offers study rooms, wireless Internet and free access to computers at each library location. The library's Web site - http://jefferson.lib.co.us - also offers a multitude of resources for kids, teens, parents and teachers to help them all have a successful school year, including nearly 70 subscription research databases. These include Academic Search Premier, CollegeSource Online, Literature Resource Center and World Book Online to name a few that are available 24/7 and are free to any library card holder.

One resource, "High School Ace" provides academic resources under English, social studies, math, science and more. There are also links to study guides, online books, translation services and more to help children do their best in school. The Homework Help page on the library's Web site offers students all of these resources and more. For parents and teachers, the site offers Internet use and safety policy resources, tips for reading aloud and a teacher's guide detailing resources for teachers, how to schedule a class tour of a library and suggestions for working with the library to best serve students and teachers.

Additional online resources include Ask A Librarian and Ask Colorado (available in both English and Spanish), an e-mail and chat service, respectively.

"It is amazing how many materials are at student's fingertips," said digital resources manager Cindy Phillips. "From finding Associated Press images to use in presentations to both sides of an issue for debate, students can find what they need to achieve the utmost in their learning."

Looking for something more hands on? The Jefferson County Public Library's Back-to-School programs are for kids of all ages, and some for their parents too. Programs involve music, art and more, and are scheduled throughout the school year.

Library classes and programs are free but advance reservations (this can be done by phone) and tickets are required. Tickets are available in the libraries two weeks before the class/program date and cannot be reserved online or by phone.

The Jefferson County Public Library has locations and Back-to-School programs in Arvada, Belmar, Columbine, Conifer, Edgewater, Evergreen, Golden, Lakewood, Standley Lake and Wheat Ridge. Library cards are available for free to any Colorado resident, as are the Back-to-School programs.

For access to the library's free online resources and the complete schedule of dates and times of Back-to-School programs, visit your local Jefferson County Public Library or http://jefferson.lib.co.us.
