Make literacy a family affair on March 3
Contributed by: Patricia Bainter on 2/15/2007

Local celebrity guests will be on hand to read aloud to children and spark reading excitement at the Junior League of Denver's eighth annual Read2Kids literacy event on Saturday, March 3rd from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at five area locations.

The event is held in conjunction with "Read Across America" day, and is sure to stir up enthusiasm for young readers, who can also take advantage of free books, refreshments and a variety of fun activities.

Making literacy a family affair has long been a goal of the volunteer members of the Junior League of Denver (JLD), but making reading fun is the key measure of success. Since 2000, JLD volunteers have teamed up with local schools to promote reading in a fun and stimulating environment, as well as providing books for children and families across Metro Denver.

"The Read2Kids literacy event is an opportunity for children and parents alike to share in the joy of reading," said Junior League of Denver President Barbara Miller. "This event is one way that the Junior League can help create a book-rich environment for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds, while at the same time reinforcing the message that reading to and with children is a vitally important family activity."

Local celebrities including Marney Duckworth, Mrs. Colorado 2006 and former Denver Nuggets stars Walter Davis, Calvin Nat and Mark Randall will be on hand to read books to the children attending the event. The event is free and open to the public, puts free books in the hands of children and encourages reading aloud. In addition to receiving books, participants will enjoy a variety of fun activities including face painting and balloon making, as well as refreshments.

The Read2Kids literacy event will be held at the following Denver Metro locations from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on March 3:

Columbine Elementary School - 2540 East 29th Avenue, Denver 80205
Molholm Elementary School - 6000 W. 9th Avenue, Lakewood 80214
Pioneer Charter School - 3230 E. 38th Avenue, Denver 80205
Colfax Elementary School - 1526 Tennyson Street, Denver 80204
Denver Firefighters Museum - 1326 Tremont Place, Denver 80204 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
