While most high school students are warm and snug in their beds on Saturday mornings and watching cartoons, West High School's Future Business Leaders of America [FBLA] woke up to help their community. Colorado FBLA's mission "is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs." [FBLA-PBL.CCCS.edu]
The 9HealthFair organization works all year long to set up for its 9 days in April and as part of WHS FBLA chapter's community service project, they volunteered 2 [very chilly and snowy] Saturdays to help out the non-profit organization. The students worked together to assemble kits that will be distributed to over 200 health fair sites in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska.
Brenda Marquez, a WHS senior, said, "This was a good experience to learn about the 9HealthFair for the class project and it was a good feeling to know I was helping someone else out." Brenda attended both volunteer days and also commented in regard to the volunteering, "I would do it again and many of my classmates would volunteer again too!" Senior Jaime Lugo said, "It was fun!"
WHS FBLA chapter president, Evelyn Arellano, said, "This volunteer experience help me learn the value of teamwork. We got the work done faster by working together."
Dave Quintana of 9HealthFair said, "It was so inspiring to see youth come together to help their community." He went on to say, "You really have some leaders at West High School."
