Students Go Pink and Purple for Leukemia

Students at Broomfield Academy went pink and purple a couple of Friday's ago, raising over $1,000 for children with leukemia. Liz Kaplan, Broomfield Academy's lead swimming instructor, came up with the idea to raise $300 for The Gabby Krause Foundation's "Bags of Fun" program. To increase awareness of the fundraising challenge, students and staff were allowed to wear pink and purple the day they brought in their donation. Some kids wore pink or purple clothes. Others went wild with pink or purple hair and jewelry.

Tammy Krause started the "Bags of Fun" program after her daughter Gabby was diagnosed with leukemia. Gabby brought a bag of fun stuff with her to the hospital and shared it with other kids who were receiving treatment.

"The 'Bags of Fun' program really touched our daughter while she was in the hospital. She received a backpack full of fun games, crafts and other activities that really helped her to keep her spirit up and to keep her learning during her treatment" commented Kaplan. We wanted to support this terrific program by raising $300 so that more kids could benefit. The students and their families really showed their community spirit by more than tripling the goal and raising over $1000.

As part of Broomfield Academy's vision to create programs that help students develop both academically and socially, students participate in monthly service projects. "Each month, we focus on a different aspect of strong character development such as honesty, integrity or respect. In addition, our staff and students choose projects to help others in the community each month. This month our service project was particularly special as we have staff and family volunteers at our school who have had direct experience with Leukemia. We ended up raising over $1,000, far exceeding our expectations for this very worthy cause," commented Dr. Vanessa Ewing, school principal. "We could not be more proud of our students and the things they do for others." Broomfield Academy is still accepting donations for this program to benefit children being treated for leukemia and other diseases. To contribute, call the school at (303) 469-6449.
