Groovy Pyramid Promotes School Wellness
Contributed by: Jenna Allen on 2/27/2008

Students were all smiles as the energy of Groovy Pyramid Ensemble filled the auditorium. Melodious songs about breakfast, nutrition and physical activity resonated down the hall. Who knew that learning about wellness could be so much fun?

In the words of the office staff at Brown Elementary School, "This was the best assembly we've ever had!! It was fun and engaging from start to finish. Both students and teachers alike had a great time!"

Groovy Pyramid Ensemble, through a partnership with the Western Dairy Council and Radio Disney, performed live at Brown and Fairview Elementary Schools in Denver on Friday, February 8th. The Groovy Pyramid is an educational music program developed by Steven Logwood, President of Positive Records, a California-based multimedia production corporation. Through hip-hop and soul music, the ensemble and featured guest JME - "the flavored milk girl" - use educational lyrics to inspire youth to improve their eating and lifestyle habits.

On Friday, February 8th, students celebrated the importance of physical activity with an energizing move-it warm-up song led by Radio Disney. Then Groovy Pyramid Ensemble took center stage. Through fun song lyrics, the hip-hop group communicated the recommendations from the new Food Guide Pyramid as well as the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Songs about the importance of breakfast, low-fat dairy, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and physical activity were performed as students clapped and danced with the beat of the music. A favorite for many of the students was the catchy song titled "Start Smart", which encouraged kids to eat breakfast for better academic performance. This jingle also reminded students to grab breakfast at school as Denver Public School District offers free breakfast to all students at both Brown and Fairview Elementary School.

To add to the fun, each student at Brown and Fairview Elementary School received a Groovy Pyramid music CD jam-packed with up-beat wellness songs as well as a 3-A-Day of Dairy bracelet.

"I thought it [the assembly] was great, getting everyone hyped up." said Michael, a student at Fairview Elementary School, at the conclusion of the performance. "I learned that you should drink milk 3 times a day."
