On Friday, February 29, 2008, students at Broomfield Academy held a Multicultural Celebration to explore the diversity of culture in the world and in the school. Teachers and students wore clothing from their heritage country and celebrated with food, music, and art from India, Korea, The Philippines, Bosnia, Greece, Scotland, Spain and other countries around the world.
Sarah Kleinsteiber, the Broomfield Academy music teacher led student musical performances with songs and dances, including a very special Capoeira (shadow dancing) performance typical of northeastern Brazil and west Africa. Students learned about specific countries and their contributions through cultural presentations by Girl Scout Troop #340 and the fifth grade Spanish class, led by Gabrielle Varani, Spanish teacher. Jing Li, the Mandarin Chinese teacher, explained the traditions of the Chinese New Year.
At lunchtime students sampled main courses, appetizers, and desserts from as Korea, China, India, The Philippines, Cambodia, Scotland, various Mediterranean countries, Austria and Argentina. The food was prepared and donated by the parents of Broomfield Academy students. While enjoying this feast, students listened to a variety of music from around the world, shared stories and learned about cultures different from their own.
Each year, Broomfield Academy welcomes and hosts a number of Korean exchange students. This year the school hosted four students, starting in January for a 2-3 month academic experience. The visiting students are Sennghoon Lee (Simon Lee), Hyun Jung Oh (Jenny Oh), Hyun Ju Oh (Sally Oh) and EunSeom Shin. Students of Broomfield Academy made a special effort to celebrate and honor the visiting students as part of the Multicultural Celebration. Two of the Korean exchange students returned to their home country in March. The other students will continue to study at Broomfield Academy through May.
"Today's Multicultural Celebration helped the students celebrate and learn about the many world cultures represented at Broomfield Academy. It allowed students to share their cultural heritage with their friends at school. Students had the opportunity to teach and learn from each other. It was a fun and interactive way for students to learn more about the world and its diversity," commented Principal Vanessa Ewing.
