St. Elizabeth kids become junior rocket scientists
Contributed by: jessica house on 3/20/2008

Welcome to Science 101 at St. Elizabeth's School, an independent Episcopal day school in northeast Denver. Our Kindergartners had much fun learning about rocket ships with this thrilling hands-on science experiment.

Mr. Eric Bebak, a kindergarten parent, made a special visit to St. Elizabeth's to demonstrate the thrills of outer space. Mr. Bebak, an electrical engineer for Ball Aerospace, introduced students to our solar system with a multi-media presentation that appealed to all learning styles. He first narrated a slide show about the sun, moon, and planets.

Next, students watched a movie about what it is like to be an astronaut in outer space; they loved watching astronauts floating through the spaceships doing the same daily routines they perform each day, such as brushing their teeth, eating and drinking, and playing games.

Then, with the kinesthetic activity pictured above, students dropped Mentos into Diet Coke bottles to get a sense of the energy rocket ships exhibit during blast off. After returning indoors for a children's story about outer space, Mr. Bebak answered the kindergartners' questions about astronomy.

Finally, their introduction to space was closed with a Visual Arts class activity in which they created colorful images of the solar system and rocket ships descending into space. Please enjoy the vibrant student art example.
