Let a WHS student help you make money
Contributed by: Julie Sigmund on 12/4/2007

On Nov. 8, Julie Sigmund's personal finance class attended the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge sponsored by the Allstate Foundation.

The event is a mock version of the high-paced & high-energy New York Stock Exchange and there isn't much difference.

The students read, review and analyze the ticker-tapes, press releases and hot tips for the day and determine what stocks they as a team want to buy and sell. Oh, by the way, they have to do this in less than 1 minute because one day lasted one minute. This event consisted two 30-minutes periods, ONE minute is an entire day. 60 days in 60 minutes! Talk about thinking quickly on your feet and making flash fast decisions. AND, each team from West High School made money on their decisions!

Hector Cervantes lead his team to a very profitable victory. Hector and his teammates started with $500,000 and ended the 60-day frenzy with $1,070,717.50! A growth of 114.14% Of the 54 teams who participated, Hector's team came in 6th place. Each West High team were winners because each team ended the day with a more than they started with....which is the name of the game!

Leonel Flores, a WHS Senior, stated "It was fun. I've seen it [NYSE] on TV, but [as he chuckles and sighs] it was really fast!"

The class would also like to thank Junior Achievement and the Allstate Foundation for this wonderful opportunity! See you next year!
