The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Younger Fund Scholarships. The JCF will distribute the two $2,250 awards to Adam Diccico, a junior at Yeshiva Toras Chaim and Michael Cohen, a junior at Herzl/RMHA at the Denver Campus for Jewish Education. This is the third year in a row that Diccico has received this honor and second consecutive year for Cohen.
The scholarship was created by William and Laura Younger to "further the education of hardworking Jewish children." In their will, the Youngers specifically named Yeshiva Toras Chaim and Herzl/RMHA to receive scholarship distributions from their fund.
"The JCF is honored to award the Younger Fund scholarships to these amazing students," said Bradley A. Friedman, J.D., Executive Director of the JCF. "These scholarships are a tremendous example of how the JCF enables people such as the Youngers to create a legacy of giving."
When 17-year-old Diccico found out he had won the scholarship for a third consecutive year he was elated. "It feels good to know they appreciate my presence here," said Diccico. "Without the Yeshiva I would be lost." Diccico comes from a non-Orthodox background. At the Yeshiva, he feels surrounded by the teachings of the Torah and says he has learned much about his heritage and about Orthodox Judaism. Diccico is strongly considering finishing up his studies at the Yeshiva in his senior year, then attending college in Israel.
"In selecting a worthy recipient for the Younger Fund Scholarship, the Yeshiva has once again selected Adam Diccico, a very deserving young man," said Rabbi Isaac Wasserman, Dean of Yeshiva Toras Chaim. "His combination of wisdom and understanding makes Adam an outstanding candidate for future leadership within the Jewish community. Adam has had many challenges and has been faced with more than his share of adversity. However, he has risen to each challenge and persevered. We feel that giving a student such as Adam this opportunity is not only an investment in the future of a young man but, moreover, is building and shaping the Jewish community of tomorrow."
Michael Cohen, 17, was "very happy" to learn he was once again a recipient of the Younger Fund Scholarship. When asked about his favorite course of study, he responded, "they are all my favorite classes, especially the Jewish ones." Cohen enjoys attending a Jewish Day school because learning about Judaism is very important to him. He also enjoys studying Hebrew because "Jews speak Hebrew."
Cohen, whose older brother also attends Herzl/RHMA, participates in basketball, soccer and baseball at the Denver Campus. When he's not studying, he likes to watch TV and hang out with his closest friends.
"Michael Cohen is a worthy recipient of the Younger Fund Scholarship because he takes such good advantage of what a Jewish Day School has to offer," said Bryan M. Hay, Head of the Herzl/RHMA Upper School. "He is a strong student whose relentless efforts to learn and succeed prove to us every day just how much he appreciates the opportunities he has at Herzl/RMHA. Michael pursues Jewish learning, college preparatory studies and the active community and extracurricular life of our school with equal enthusiasm. His hard work and positive attitude make our school a better place."
The mission of the Jewish Community Foundation is to be the central source for long-term philanthropy, endowment and planned giving for individuals and institutions in our Colorado Jewish community.
