CCU Professor Leads Panel in Washington, D.C.
Contributed by: Colorado Christian University on 12/13/2006

Innovative teaching methods and new technologies were among the topics of discussion on November 17-21, 2006, at the annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and American Academy of Religion (AAR). At this year's joint conference, held in Washington, D.C., Colorado Christian University (CCU) School of Theology professor Frank Ritchel Ames joined over 11,000 national and international scholars to present research, exchange ideas, and explore publications on the latest developments in biblical and religious studies.

A member of the steering committee for the SBL Consultation on War in Ancient Israel, Ames presided this year over the conference session entitled "Strategies and Interpretations of Ancient Israelite Warfare." At a second session, he also presented on "The Rhetorical Function of Expressing a Desire for Peace During the Pursuit of War." The originally three-year warfare consultation has now been advanced (by the SBL National Program Committee) to a six-year section intended to foster interdisciplinary research on ancient Israelite warfare and develop a reference work. Proceedings from the consultation will be released in a separate volume.

While in Washington, Ames also met with congressional staff members to advocate support for the Fulbright Program, which provides teaching and study abroad grants for American educators and students. CCU faculty members who have received Fulbright grants include historians Stanley Dyck, William Watson, and English professor Windy Petrie.

The Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion are housed in Atlanta, Georgia, on the campus of Emory University. They organize academic congresses, publish peer-reviewed books and journals, and provide opportunities for professional development for teachers and scholars working in biblical and religious studies.
