Elections officials gear up for Aug. 12 primary

Officials with the Denver Elections Division conducted a public logic and accuracy test July 29 at its headquarters located at 3888 E. Mexico Ave. in Denver.

The test, which was held in anticipation of the Aug. 12 primary election, was a success, according to Alton Dillard, spokesman for the Denver Elections Division.

"Everything went swimmingly," Dillard said. "Not only did we finish in record time, but all of the numbers matched up. From here, we're preparing for early voting."

Elections officials tested two types of voting equipment: Sequoia 400c Ballot scanners, which will be used to count the paper ballots, and Sequoia Edge II electronic touch-screen voting machines, which will be available at polling places during early voting and on election day primarily to accommodate voters with disabilities.

The city returned to paper ballots and traditional precinct-based polling locations this year after a 2006 election debacle in which thousands of voters waited in line for hours when some of the new poll books crashed. At least one electronic voting machine will be available at each location, however, in order to comply with federal law.

Approximately 80,000 Denver residents have requested to do their voting via mail-in ballot this year, Dillard said. This year, residents are required to apply for a mail-in ballot.

Residents can still apply for a mail-in ballot, though time is running short. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot to be mailed to you is Aug. 5.

The deadline to pick up a mail-in ballot, which can be found at Denver Elections Division, 3888 E. Mexico Ave., is Aug. 8.

Mailed ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day in order to count.

Early voting will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 4 to 8 at 13 locations in the Denver area, which include:

-- Barnum Recreation Center, 360 Hooker St.
-- Christ Church United Methodist Church, 690 Colorado Blvd.
