Fine Arts Flourish at Boys & Girls Clubs
Contributed by: Kalen Landow on 2/8/2008

The arts are alive and well in Denver, as BGCMD celebrated its annual juried competition with an artists' reception on Tuesday, January 15.

Young artists, ages 6 to 18, from around the area gathered to view each other's work and receive awards for monochromatic drawing, multicolor drawing, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, print making, mixed media, collage, and sculpture. One of the highlights of the evening was the display of a group project titled Patchwork of Life. This handmade quilt was made by kids and teens from five Metro area Clubs.

Ashton A., a 13-year-old member from the Denver Broncos Club participated in the Patchwork of Life project, and said that he loves creating artwork, especially photography and clay sculpture. He will soon be learning papier mache and is
looking forward to learning a new medium.

Jacqueline A., a 7-year-old from the Boettcher Club, won an award for her multicolor drawing, The Africans, and said that drawing was her favorite thing to do in the arts room at her Club. Judge Steve Kaus, from Sports Authority, commented, "Judging this event was truly a pleasure! These children have a lot of talent and I love to see the way Boys & Girls Clubs nurture and develop their artistic gifts, which may have otherwise gone undetected or ignored."

A complete list of winners is available on our Web site at www.bgcmd.org.
