A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Pigeon

Nathan Abels is an aerial photographer, a painter and, most recently, a pigeon enthusiast. Yes, pigeons are his new thing and he handles the subject matter with as much intellectual rigor and manual dexterity as he has his past work.

Abels has made a name for himself in Denver, in just a little over a year, for representing the suburbs from the sky. Making a day job of riding in airplanes and taking photographs of the ground below, he has represented the mind-numbing multiplicity of row after row of identical houses, as well as the wide-open skies around them. The process has also been a source of inspiration for the paintings Abels has been making recently.
