Space Art Gallery to host award winning artist

Rocky Mountain Women's Institute to showcase 2007/08 Associates at Space Art Gallery

For over a quarter of a century the Rocky Mountain Women's Institute has been awarding seven to ten women from all walks of the arts and letters stipends and support services to help them complete a yearlong creative project. For the past eight of those years Elizabeth Braden has been the executive director and the small petite fire cracker of a woman promises that this years RMWI Associates showcase April 9th at Space Art Gallery ( 6pm) 765 Santa Fe Drive will be " cutting edge and spectacular."


Braden who has master's in art education from the Rhode Island School of design and is currently adjunct professor of art history UCD, moved the showcase to the Santa Fe Arts District to bring attention to the organization and it's associates program.

" Eight years ago this program almost died due to funding issues. I had just moved to Denver from a teaching position back east. I had never seen a program like this. It was so dynamic. The women who apply for this program are really the cream of the crop in their field. One of the issues in the past has been that their work was usually showcased at a campus gallery and did not receive the public attention it deserved. This year is different." Said Braden

So different in fact that all seven of the women who faced stiff competition to join the elite list of RMWI fellows, have turned the entire Space Gallery into a performance theater for the opening reception on April 9th. Attendees at the free public event will be treated to spectacular sculptor, photo journalist displays, art work, puppet theater, poetry readings and storytelling.

Braden also has incorporated visits from all RMWI associates in her class curriculum for Images and Identity at UCD. "This class is so innovative and unusual. For the past four years the artist have come into class and taught the students for three days. This not only give the artist a chance to interact with students but it gives the students a real glimpse into the working lives of real writers, musicians, dancers and visual artist." Noted Braden

Braden also points pointed out that this years showcase is one of the most diverse in the organizations history in terms of culture, heritage and disciplines. " We have come to a place where all women from many different walks of life and artistic endeavors are sisters working towards a common goal. To enlighten and encourage others women to do the same as they enhance the quality of the creative process."


This years artist include: Kate Aspinal an artist from Scotland, holds a degree in Art History from the historic University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Karen Carter A native of Syracuse, New York, Karen received dual majors from Syracuse University in magazine journalism and fine arts. Over the past 20 years, she's written for various city, medical, and business publications. Margarita Blush ,a puppeteer from Bulgaria, holds a masters degree in directing for puppet and alternative theatre from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. Renee Fajardo , who holds a law from the University of Nebraska ,teachs creative writing and storytelling. She specailizing in South Western lore. Li Hardison, portrait artist and figurative sculptor, also explores the dignity and strength of women, and African American women in particular, through her art. Deanna Lowman , holds a degree in photography from the University Colorado.She photographs a wide variety of subjects, focusing on the dignity of human expereince. Joy Sawyer, teaches creative writing at the University of Denver. As a performance poet, she's in the process of producing a theatrical presentation of a sonnet crown called "Following the Piper." Joy holds a masters degree from the NYU Gallatin Division, where she received the Herbert Rubin Award for Outstanding Creative Writing.
