"Girls Only" presents a giddy look at being a girl
New Play Is a Humorous and Honest Celebration of Womanhood
Every woman remembers the excitement of buying her first bra, the agony of junior high heartbreak, and the joy of falling in love for the first time. Throughout life, these are milestones women celebrate with their girlfriends. The spirited comedy "Girls Only" brings women together for a light-hearted evening about the girlie-girlness of being a girl that will have audiences fighting back tears of laughter.
"Girls Only" will play at the Avenue Theater January 18 - February 24, 2008. Created by two accomplished Denver actors, Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein of A.C.E. Entertainment, "Girls Only" was born after the two unearthed their junior high diaries and shared the stories within. After a side-splitting evening spent laughing about the contents, the two realized they had the makings of a comedy that would resonate with girls of all ages. The result is a high-energy, hilarious adventure into womanhood.
"While women's issues and women's rights have become important platforms that receive deserved attention, there hasn't been a production about the common experiences that shape all women," said Linda Klein. "From passing notes in class to nursing in public, 'Girls Only' celebrates the private pieces of a woman's inner workings with humor, irreverence and a little silliness."
During the play's run, attendees also will enjoy the "Diary Museum," a shrine of pages from real women's diaries set up in the theater lobby. The pages are actual reproductions from submitted diaries, complete with heart dots on each lowercase "I" and firsthand, twelve-year-old accounts of the dramatic, often comical, events of adolescent life. Because "Girls Only" is in fact a woman's only event (tickets to the show are sold only to ladies), the event is a comfortable forum for sharing such secrets, much like an adult slumber party.
"Keeping a diary is an almost universal experience in a young woman's life. Who didn't gush about the cutest boy in school or complain about unfair parents and siblings for page after page?" said Barbara Gehring. "Looking back on those entries as an adult is a hilarious and heartwarming experience."
Sorry, guys. As the name implies, this one is for girls only. To create a comfortable environment for women, "Girls Only" does not sell tickets to men. Our male friends can rest assured, however, "Girl's Only" is not about male bashing but rather a celebration of all things girlie.
"Girls Only" is produced by A.C.E. Entertainment and The Avenue Theater. Shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. during the play's run January 18 - February 24, 2008. Tickets cost $20; group discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Purchase tickets by calling the Avenue Theater box office at 303-321-5925 or visit www.acecomedy.com/GirlsOnly.
