Giving Voice to Israel @ 60
Contributed by: Jodie Oxman on 4/8/2008

What do a cartoonist, the composer of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" the founder of the musical group Beat'achon, a music teacher, a composer, a doctor in metallurgy, a jazz saxophonist and classical concert pianist have in common? They are all part of the musical experience "Voices for Israel" taking place on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at BMH-BJ Congregation to celebrate and honor Israel's 60th Anniversary of Statehood.
What started in June 1998 as a concert of Jewish music at BMH-BJ featuring the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir, has evolved into a celebration of Jewish culture, music, art and the creative Jewish spirit.
Over the past 10 years, the BMH-BJ Cantor's Cultural Committee has hosted a variety of internationally acclaimed performing artists sharing with sold-out audiences a kaleidoscope of Jewish music.
This year the Cantor's Cultural Committee, with support from local Jewish agencies, organizations and Jewish Day Schools, presents a new cultural experience featuring many voices centering on the theme "One Nation One Heart."
"Israel at 60 presents multiple opportunities to reflect upon and celebrate this significant milestone, as well as to recognize the beauty of Israel's history and achievements," said Cantor Joel Lichterman of BMH-BJ.
The concept of Jewish artists uniting to share their creativity and music to raise awareness of, and support for Israel was initiated by Jordan B. Gorfinkel, producer of pioneering Jewish vocal groups such as Beat'achon, Kol Zimra and more recently, "Voices for Israel."
This national grassroots movement brings together both American and Israeli artists to express the soul of the Jewish people. National performers joining Gorfinkel include Avy Schreiber, David Ross and Sean Altman together with local artists.
"Music, more than any other medium, engages the audience in such a way that they are able to experience the color and diversity of Israel," said Lichterman.
Through the use of multimedia and song, from the familiar to contemporary Hebrew and English, this diverse group of performers will present a concert appealing to all ages.
Early bookings are encouraged. For more information and reservations contact Della Jultak at BMH-BJ Congregation: 303-388-4203 ext 5811.
