Local leaders to examine state’s past and future

"Reflecting on the Past, Illuminating the Future" with Dick Lamm, Rebecca Love Kourlis and Sen. Wayne Allard

History Colorado and Downtown Denver Partnership are pleased to announce the inaugural President's Summer Institute, a speaker series of Colorado leaders to examine how Colorado's past can illuminate and shape our future.

Hosted by the Colorado Historical Society's President and CEO, Edward C. Nichols, the series will begin on May 23and will feature speakers from Colorado's executive, judicial, and legislative branches of government.

These monthly programs will be held over continental breakfast from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Colorado History Museum, 1300 Broadway, Denver. Tickets are $20 per person for each lecture and reservations are required due to limited seating. Call 303/866-4686 for reservations.

MAY 23

Pioneers and Politicians: a History of Colorado's Governors

Richard Lamm, governor of Colorado from 1975-1987, will give an overview of Colorado's governors and the impact they have had on the state. Colorado has had 37 governors, each with unique stories, careers, and personalities. Hear about a Ku Klux Klan governor who was also chancellor at the University of Denver and learn why Colorado once had three different governors in the same day.

JUNE 17

The Courts in Colorado - Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going

Rebecca Love Kourlis served as a Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court for 11 years, resigning in January 2006 to establish and lead the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System at the University of Denver. The author of more than 200 opinions and dissents during her tenure, Kourlis also spearheaded significant reforms in the court system relating to juries, family law and attorney regulation.

JULY 7

Colorado's U.S. Senators

U.S Senator Wayne Allard will speak about the life and times of his predecessors--the 33 individuals who have represented Colorado in the U.S. Senate. He'll focus on our first two senators, Chaffee and Teller, while presenting a general overview of those who have served Colorado in the greatest deliberative body in the world. He'll also explain why the national election of 1876-the year Colorado became "the Centennial State"-was even more controversial than the 2000 presidential contest.
