Guides through the universe
Contributed by: Denver Museum of Nature & Science on 7/2/2008

Over the past five years, Space Odyssey has given more than 3 million visitors the opportunity to explore the cosmos, visit Mars and make their own discoveries. But the adventure just wouldn't be the same without the hard work and dedication of volunteers. Day in and day out, Space Odyssey volunteers help lead the way through the galaxy with demonstrations, live performances and hands-on exhibits.

One such volunteer is Rich VandeKoppel. Rich has given every Tuesday afternoon to Space Odyssey since it opened its doors five years ago.

"One of the best things about being a Space Odyssey volunteer is being able to help children, youth and adults improve their understanding of the development and physical nature of our solar system, galaxy and universe," Rich said.

And there's no one better than Rich to teach those fundamentals. He worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry for forty years, starting his career the same year Sputnik was launched. He was even featured on the cover of Popular Science.

"My family and friends were surprised," Rich said, "it was a feature article on the space-based missile defense program I was leading."

But in the end, it's not just Rich that's doing the teaching.

"The other great thingabout being a Space Odyssey volunteer is that I continue to expand and develop my own understanding," Rich said.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science couldn't provide visitors with a high-quality experience without the enthusiastic commitment of our 1,600 volunteers. If you'd like to volunteer at the Museum, click here for more information on how to get involved.
