Learn about “The World of Human Trafficking” on Sat., Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church on the corner of Hampden and Monaco in southeast Denver. The program will be presented by global consultant, Rev. Lauran Bethell, co-founder of Thailand’s New Life Centers and 2005 Baptist World Alliance Human Rights Award winner.
The New Life Center is an educational institution that serves Thailand’s Northern tribal women who are at-risk of becoming victims of human trafficking. The Center provides education as well as literacy and job skill training. It rehabilitates former prostitutes and works to reduce risk factors among other women. The original goal of the Center was to help prevent young women from being forced into abusive labor situations. Soon, it was evident that the program needed to provide protection and rehabilitation for young women who had already experienced forced labor and abusive situations (i.e., brothels, factories, abusive domestic problems). Today, with the help of the Thai government, the New Life Center has been able to assist hundreds of girls each year.
In 2001, Bethell moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where she serves as international consultant to encourage and facilitate programs that address the exploitation of women and children.
