Scores of Eastern Orthodox Christians from across the Denver area met recently at Denver's landmark Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral to join in prayer for Orthodox Christians in the troubled Serbian province of Kosovo.
Serbian, Greek and other Eastern Orthodox clergy led a liturgy at the cathedral on March 25 for Kosovo's Serbian population, which has been under siege by Muslim separatists who recently declared independence in a bid to sever Kosovo from the rest of Serbia. Serbians regard Kosovo as the cradle of their religion, culture and ethnic identity. The province is home to many revered Serbian Orthodox churches and other religious shrines that have been destroyed or desecrated by Muslim extremists. Kosovo's Serbian minority has been under attack, and Serbian Christians around the world along with fellow Orthodox Christians have been praying for their safety.
His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of the
Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver
presided at the prayer service as clergy representing several area Eastern Orthodox congregations conducted the mass. Afterward, Metropolitan Isaiah as well as several of the clergy, including the Rev. Father Radovan Petrovic, of Denver's
St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Mission Parish
, addressed the gathering to provide background on the Kosovo crisis.
Father Radovan expressed gratitude to Metropolitan Isaiah for extending his fervent support to the Serbian people in their time of need.
Those who organized the event made clear that while there is a distinct political dimension to the events unfolding in Kosovo, the gathering was spiritual in nature and was intended to pray for peace and goodwill among all of Kosovo's peoples.
