Amazing Race teams raise $10,000
Contributed by: Daniel Smith/YourHub.com on 5/19/2008

Dozens of four-person teams spread across downtown and in some cases did unusual things during the second annual Mile High Amazing Race May 17 to benefit the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.

Final tallies were incomplete, but officials said approximately $10,000 was raisedto fund blood cancer research, provide patient services and education. That's about double last year's effort.

Patterned after the television show, teams used clues to find checkpoints and meet challenges around Denver, including kayaking on the Platte River, having their heads shaved (or finding a volunteer to have it done), creating a new flavor of ice cream and others stunts while plotting a route to the finish line.

At one of the downtown checkpoints, teams had to find their way to the top of the RTD Plaza at Colfax Avenue and Broadway and sell hot dogs to garner points for their team.

One team sold a record $1,000 hot dog and the total raised at that checkpoint helped immensely, totaling $3,600 according to Cathie Nicholson of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society

Contestants competed for over $5,000 in prizes including round-trip airline tickets and gift certificates to local restaurants.

At the end of the day, the final checkpointbrought the contestants to Skyline Park, whereteams enjoyeda band, beer and lots of great food.

A personal insight to the day was provided by Nicholson, who forwarded this posting from Brandan, one of the young patients who participated at the Jet Hotel checkpoint:

Today was also another great day and raising awareness and fighting cancer!! The Leukemia Society's Local Chapter held the Annual Mile High Amazing race today. An eventful scavenger hunt throughout beautiful Denver downtown streets. There were 85 or so teams in the race raising big money for the Society and for Research. It was tearful and cheerful at the same time to see this many teams come by at the checkpoint we were assigned to at the Jet Hotel and leave energized, amazed, upbeat and visibly more motivated after the patient interviews to selflessly help a cause that means so much to families like ours! Thank you everyone who participated, you are all amazing, and we hope you raised a lot of money to find a cure!!!! To stop mortality as being part of cancer prognosis!!! GO TEAM!!! We love you for everything you did and do today and future endeavors. The kids and families we have met today were just outmost wonderful and such amazing display of spirits and strength! Some kids were celebrating 5 years cancer free, some were celebrating just a good week in therapy , some were just plain happy to be there like us!!
