Gardens' Spring Plant Sale Starts Tomorrow!
Contributed by: Lyn Berry-Helmlinger on 5/8/2008

Learn the ins and outs of high-altitude gardening while you purchase your plants for the new growing season at Denver Botanic Gardens' annual Plant Sale. The Sale will once again offer hundreds of varieties of plants on Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (members only 8:30-10 a.m.) and Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (members only 8:30-10 a.m.).

The theme for the 2008 Sale is "Urban Nature" and will feature a variety of options on how to incorporate urban living into your own scenery, whether you have a small garden or no garden at all. "Urban Nature" demonstrates how nature can penetrate an urban environment; how humans change their landscape, whether built or natural; and how the city and built landscape can be highlighted in a garden setting. Experts will be on hand during the Plant Sale, offering container planting for apartment living and recommendations for the grouping of plants. Shoppers should be sure to visit the Annuals section at the sale, where they can purchase three pre-designed plant kits for plants conducive to sunny or shady locations. Each kit contains six plants, care instructions and a template that will show how to arrange the plants within a container to ensure a beautiful garden in a pot all season long.

The Sale will feature rare and unusual plants that are non-invasive. Overall, more than 85,000 of the very best plants for our region will be offered, including perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables, water plants, rock alpine plants and much more. The always-popular Garden Grown Division will once again be featured during this sale.

The Gardens' renowned horticulturists will be available to answer questions about the best plants for your own garden. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own wagons to the Sale.

Admission to the Sale is free and all proceeds benefit education programs at the Gardens.

The Plant Sale is sponsored by Swingle Lawn, Tree & Landscape Care; Whole Foods Market; and Bellco Credit Union.
