Bring change to make a change
Contributed by: Lynne Butler on 5/10/2008

The third grade students of Ms. Jenna Askey's class at Eldorado Elementary are a very caring group. They have been pen pals with some children in an orphanage, near Kisumu, Kenya, since the beginning of the school year.

In early 2008, the students learned political unrest was causing the money used to buy basics like rice and school supplies to be unavailable. The money was still in the bank, but a hold had been placed on all money, so the orphanage was unable to access their funds. The students felt very sorry for their pen pals and wanted to help them. They thought of fundraisers like a fun run, car wash, bake sale, etc. The only problem is that most fundraisers cost money to make money and the money needed to be raised quickly.

The students came up with a fundraiser called "Bring Change to Make a Change". The students made flyers, posters and made announcements over the schools speaker. They asked each student at Eldorado to bring in 60 cents each - one penny for each of the penpals. The students could find this money by scrounging in their room, looking under couch cushions or from their savings. They didn't want to ask parents to write another check since schools fund-raise so often. The students went to the classrooms, with various cans to collect money, each day for one week.

Their goal was to raise at least $500 and the prize would be a special sports jersey day for the whole school. From the time the students heard about this crisis at the orphanage to when they finished the week of collecting money was two weeks. In that amount of time, they were able to collect $600 in change and small bills. 100% of that money was wired to the orphanage.

When people say our children only think about themselves I say they are very wrong. And when people say there is toomuch wrong in the world, so how can one person make a change, I say they are wrong again. Every minute given in service and every penny given for supplies can make a difference in the life or death of another.

I applaud these third graders: Ashley Butler, Maddi Pierson, Luke Reiner, Brady Reiner, Nicky Gates, Mia Gates, Heydan Fisher, Ashley Knapp, Blair Whiting and Mikayla Dahlager. We are in very good hands with this upcoming generation!
