I just returned from the National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops (NARTS) 21st Annual Conference in Indianapolis. What I found is that stores like mine that sell "gently used" clothing are seeing increased traffic because we are a sanctuary for cash-strapped consumers. In my 16 years owning UpScale Plus in Wheat Ridge, I know that when times are good, it's the shoppers who shop. When times are not so good, it's the savers who want to save. We cater to those who want to save and love designer labels, but are watching the bottom line. In some cases, we receive clothes for consignment that still have the original retail store tags. Businesswomen who want to dress professionally can buy a suit at 40% to 80% less than the actual price when purchased at a consignment store. Renewed interest in recycling is also responsible for more consignment. Recycling has become more acceptable today among consumers because of the 'green' trend. We consign women's plus sizes - 14W throu 28W. All the clothing to be consigned must be freshly cleaned, pressed and on hangers and no older than 1-2 years old. Many consumers who used to buy high end clothes new, now would rather buy them gently used at a class consignment shop and save.
