Chinese New Year Celebration
Will Feature Metropolitan Opera Star
Hao Jiang Tian
Event will Benefit Nathan Yip Foundation
On Saturday, February 2, 2008, the Nathan Yip Foundation will celebrate its 5th annual Chinese New Year Celebration with a tribute to the Foundation's support of schools and education in China and Mexico.
This year's celebration will feature Denver-trained Metropolitan Opera star, Hao Jiang Tian. Tian, whose powerful bass voice took him from his native China to the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music for a master's degree in the early 1980's, has enjoyed international career in opera. He has sung with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for over 16 years, performing over 26 roles in more than 300 performances. Tian has performed alongside such opera greats at Placido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti. Last summer at the Central City Opera House in Colorado, he performed the lead role in the world premier of the opera Poet Li Bai, which garnered international acclaim. This September he will star in Amy Tan's new opera, "The Bonesetter's Daughter" with the San Francisco Opera.
"I owe a lot to Colorado," said Tian, by phone from his New York City apartment. "I have known Linda and Jimmy Yip for a long time and am touched by the difference the Nathan Yip Foundation is making in so many children's lives around the world. This is a way for me to help others and give back to Colorado, a community I love, and to the many people and fans who have supported my career," he added.
Tian will also unveil his memoir, being published by John Wiley & Sons in their association with Lincoln Center Books. The book, Along the Roaring River: My Wild Ride from Mao to the Met, features much from Tian's beginning years in Colorado. " I hope to do a very special performance at this event," said Tian. "one that will be reminiscent of my early years in Denver, featuring some of the American songs I learned when I entertained during my years as a student. It will be a fun evening."
Although the book will not be formally released until May, advance orders will be taken and all proceeds will benefit the Nathan Yip Foundation.
Also featured at the celebration will be the Shaolin Hung Mei Lion Dancers and a lavish Chinese feast. Anne Trujillo, anchor for The Denver Channel KMGH News 7, will be master of ceremonies. A silent and live auction will round out the evening's festivities.
Jimmy and Linda Yip founded the Nathan Yip Foundation in 2003 after they tragically lost their only child, Nathan, in an automobile accident. Nathan, 19
years old, was a graduate of the Kent Denver School and a freshman at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
"Nathan was a young man with great empathy and concern for world problems," said Jimmy Yip. "As a Chinese-American, he knew how fortunate he was to be born in America and knew that by connecting with children in other countries, he could make a true difference and begin to help create a more global society."
In the past five years, the Nathan Yip Foundation has raised over $500,000, supporting schools and orphanages in China, Mexico and Africa. "For 2008, said Jimmy Yip, "our goal is to identify a good cause in our home state of Colorado that the Nathan Yip Foundation can support. We will continue our work in the third world countries, but feel it is necessary to support children and families in our backyard."
The Chinese New Year Benefit Event will take place Saturday, February 2, at
5 p.m. at the University of Denver Cable Center at 2000 Buchtel Boulevard. For ticket information, call 303.817.8400 or e-mail info@nathanyipfoundation.org. You may also visit the Nathan Yip Foundation website at www.nathanyipfoundation.org.
