No, my husband isn't a pervert
Contributed by: Rebecca Pilson on 2/8/2007

I was going to college in Hawaii, and definitly not looking for my future husband. In fact, I was having too much fun dating! I was dating a Marine until he broke up with me on my 19th birthday.

I had agreed to meet with a mutual friend of ours in the city. We were walking down the street, and I saw my ex (by about 6 hours) getting into a cab with another girl. He looked right at me and didn't say anything! I was so upset. Later that evening, I was talking to our friend on the phone, and he asked for my pager number again. I gave it to him, and we eventually hung up.

Around 11pm, I received a page from a number I didn't recognize. I called the number back, and reached a man with a deep husky voice. I asked who this was, and he told me. He said his name was Mark. I asked how he got my number, and if this was some prank being done by my ex. He said it wasn't a prank, and told me the truth. . . . He was on guard duty that particular weekend. Him and his buddies weren't real busy, so they were listening to cell phone conversations on a scanner. He liked my voice, so he memorized my pager number and decided to call it.

I should have hung up, but I didn't. We continued to talk on the phone for about a month, then we agreed to meet in a public place. We hit it off. It's funny because I always said I would never date, let alone marry, a man who was older than me, bald, or had kids. He met all those criteria.

I guess I had already come to like him over the phone. We continued to see each other for 6 months, and I finally decided to tell my parents. They freaked out! I dropped out of college and moved in with Mark the next day. We lived together for a few years, but it was difficult. I finally came back to Colorado. He thought I was coming back, but I said I wasn't and that we should see other people. Well, he didn't agree, so he flew out to Colorado for a week. He met my dad, and wined and dined me. I was once again smitten. He said he'd come back for me. He went home, packed or sold his things, arranged for his brother to keep his son for 1 year, and moved out to Colorado.

That was probably one of the best years of my life. I was so happy. Towards the end of the year, Mark told me he was going to buy a home, with or without me, and I needed to make a decision. I finally agreed to buy a home with him, but was terrified. During the signing, I was so nervous, I told Mark not to look at, touch, or talk to me. About a year later, we were married in our new church.

We've been together now for 11 years, and I am so thankful. A man most people would call a pervert or a stalker, turned out to be the most wonderful, kind, loving man in the world. So I say, "NO! He's not a pervert (OK, maybe he is :-) )."
