Picture it. Small town South Dakota. Two rival high schools. A high school freshman's birthday party. I was gangly with braces and giant eyebrows. He was gorgeous, stylish and 'cool.' It was love at first sight. For me. He, on the other hand, had absolutely no idea who I was. He worked at the mall, so I used to walk by the store, never daring to go in. Another brief encounter, one year later. We made eye contact and I swear he smiled. I was a stuttering, silly mess.
Fast forward 6 years later. I was a college girl now. Braces were gone, the eyebrows (thankfully) cleaned up, confident. A mutual friends Christmas party. This time an actual conversation. And then, a kiss. All of a sudden, the roles are reversed. It's him that has a crush on me! We went back to our respective schools for 2nd semester thinking we'd never see each other again. I mysteriously received flowers on Valentine's Day from an anonymous sender. That summer, another chance encounter back home where he revealed, he was the sender of my Valentine flowers! (an elderly florist had inadvertently left his name off the card)
One more time 6 years later. We both have jobs and live on opposite sides of the country. I made the decision to pack up my life and move West. En route to California, I ran into him in our hometown at a bar. We left together, spent the next 10 days inseparable, and . . . I live in Denver now. We're getting married this June!
