Soul Mates miles away
Contributed by: laurie zempel on 2/14/2007

My story isn't so much HOW we met, but after we met! It was a Wednesday nite in Denver when my girlfriend Karen wanted me to join her and her co-workers for a drink at 'ladies nite' dance club (that no longer is around unfortunately!) I met up with her just 5 minutes after she was introduced to my 'future' husband Bill Zempel. She really liked him, but he was attracked to me when we were introduced, but that didn't stop her from pursuing him all nite long, even tho he was only talking to me and asking me to dance! Well, when we were introduced, I asked him his last name (it was my tradition to ask guys their last names, because I have a VERY large family and always felt like I would be related to a nice guy that I really liked). When he told me it was "Zempel", I replied, " That sounds familiar!?" What I didn't tell him was the 'picture of a rounded topped tombstone with his last name on it" is what came to my mind! (I didn't want to scare him away, I thought!) Well, Bill told me that there was NO WAY I would know his last name, because there weren't alot of Zempel's left on this planet anymore. So, I left it alone.
It bothered me so bad that I wrote my parents in MN (where I come from and my whole family of 13 still live!) and told them about this guy I met and his last name, and that it sounded familiar to me. Well, my mom wrote me back and told me that 'ole man' Zempel lived across the road from our farm and then there was another Zempel family living near our other rental property about 4 miles away from the farm. I thought WOW!
Well, in the mean time, Bill called his mom and dad in Montrose, CO where they settled down after retiring from the Air Force after 25 years. He told them about this cute girl he met who's from Ortonville, MN. They told him that they were just in that small town 3 months prior, while driving around on vacation, and thought they'd stop and see if any 'ancestor' realatives still lived around there. Well, to their surprize, there was still a 80 year old living Aunt (Zempel by marriage), who they spent time with and she took them around to the cousins (with a different last name). They stayed overnite at their home and never thought anything of it, until Bill and I met and found out that this was my mom and dad's renters and this is my parents home where they live now after retiring off the farm!!! So, before Bill and I met each other, Bill's parents slept overnite at my parents home miles away!!! SMALL WORLD!
Since then we have found out we are not related due to religion backgrounds in those days (Catholics vs Lutheran/Methodist) and Bill's Great Grandparents are buried in a small cemetary just 3 blocks away from my parents house. Growing up I remember 2 little old ladies that lived across the road from the farm that were sisters who married brothers, and after they passed away, my mom found out that their maiden name was Zempel!
It's been quit the story to tell over and over to people, and it's amazing how two people meet in a 'pick up' bar in Denver and find so much family history together!
