It was the culmination of over a month of planning and everyone was in on it.

Everyone, of course, except finance-to-be Kristin Kogutkiewicz.

Rewind a few weeks.

With the diamond ring securely hidden across the street at his friends' house, Drew Fahey started coordinating the details of a proposal to his longtime girlfriend. Since the couple had talked about getting hitched for a while, the element of surprise would take some cunning. Fahey rose to the challenge, deciding to pop the question while on a group outing and even inviting friends from out of state for the weekend, throwing Kogutkiewicz off the trail.

It all came together June 28 and 29. It started with a Saturday afternoon rafting trip, then the group headed out to a rented condo in Breckenridge. A total of nine friends woke on Sunday ready to climb nearby fourteener Quandary Peak, eight of which knew what was waiting at the summit.

It took just over four hours to reach the peak and after a romantic group lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Fahey pulled Kogutkiewicz away, claiming to make room for other hikers. As the two walked away, Kogutkiewicz didn't notice that no one else followed. Looking out over the mountains, Fahey told Kogutkiewicz he loved her and wanted to spent the rest of his life with her. As he started to reach into his pocket, Kogutkiewicz' eyes grew wide with disbelief and she started laughing and hugging her then-still-boyfriend.

"I want to do this right," Fahey said and dropped to one knee, a difficult task among the jagged rocks.

He asked Kogutkiewicz to marry him, which she accepted with a smile and few tears as he slipped the ring onto her finger. As they sealed the engagement with a kiss, the crowd of hikers resting at the top of the mountain gave them a thundering round of applause.

Hugs, a bottle of champagne and a 14,265-foot toast awaited Fahey and the future Mrs. Fahey as they returned to their friends.

Hikers passed the word and Kogutkiewicz encountered multiple congratulations from passing climbers on the two-and-half hour trip down the mountain face.

Fahey and Kogutkiewicz, both of Denver, plan to wed next summer in Wisconsin.
