John Powers- Awarded 11th Annual Wirth Chair Award

John Powers started his career as a rancher and real estate broker in Rifle, and then left the Western Slope to get an MBA in finance at the University of Colorado. He has been involved in education, conservation and sustainable economic development ever since.

John has served as an advisor to Greenprint Denver and a board member of Colorado Conservation Voters, the Colorado Environmental Coalition and the Educational Foundation of America.

He Founded the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado ( www.allianceforcolorado.org<http://www.allianceforcolorado.org> ) in 2004 and set out to transform a 100-year-old warehouse on Wynkoop Street into a model of energy efficiency and progressive collaboration among 27 nonprofit organizations.

The Center has received gold and silver certifications from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program known as LEED. The green design features have resulted in water use dropping by nearly 90 percent and electricity consumption dropping by 20 percent at the same time occupancy at the center has doubled and the number of visitors has increased tenfold.

The Wirth Chair is committed to helping governments, businesses, non-profit groups and community organizations form sustainable development partnerships that carefully balance economic, environmental and expanded social welfare objectives and strategies.
