On Wednesday, April 30th, Mayor John Hickenlooper joined Denver Children's Home (DCH), the first nonprofit in the State, and Oprah's Big Give contestants Stephen Paletta and Eric Klein on the Wolf Family Foundation field to celebrate the accomplishments of Denver Children's Home and their efforts to "Pay It Forward."

Over 150 Denver Children's Home kids, staff, and supporters feasted on a delicious BBQ picnic while listening to Jamie Laurie, lead lyricist for Flobots, and DCH kids share their musical talents with the crowd.

Stephen, Oprah's Big Give winner, shared his deep adoration for the work of Denver Children's Home and his experience working with the community of Denver during the taping of Oprah's Big Give. "You are an amazing community. You have continued to step up for Denver Children's Home and we were honored to see it in person! Your support continues to be necessary today!"

Mayor Hickenlooper reiterated these sentiments, "Denver Children's Home is a leader in the care of children. Our support of this organization is crucial to the future of our community."

During Oprah's Big Give, Stephen and Eric gave Denver Children's Home two 2007 Ford Edges. Denver Children's Home maximized that gift by trading in those cars for a passenger van for transportation needed at DCH, a pickup truck for helping to maintain the 107-year old building, and a Ford Taurus.

Dr. Jerry Yager, Executive Director, addressed the crowd, "In the spirit of Oprah's Big Give, Denver Children's Home is "Paying It Forward" by giving away a car to a local family in need. We believe it is as important to get as to give and teaching the children of Denver Children's Home that valuable lesson is important."

Dr. Rebecca Hea, Associate Executive Director, introduced Dorris Ursery Hobson as the backbone of that family in need. After taking in her two twin nephews, Dorris has struggled for work, food, and especially transportation. In addition to the car, Denver Children's Home presented Dorris and her family the remaining amount from the trade of the Ford Edges - a check for $1,500.

"I was ashamed to have to come to Denver Children's Home for help, but I know what a blessing they have been. Thank you. Thank you so much," Dorris said.
