Unique Play Opens October 9th - Shadow Theatre
Contributed by: Christine Zipps on 10/7/2008

The only black theater in the Rocky Mountain region, Shadow Theatre Company has comfortably settled into their larger, updated space and looking forward to their first full season in their new location. The move from Denver to Aurora seemed a necessity for they lacked for adequate dressing rooms and restrooms for the actors in their former building. It seems fitting that this maverick company chose the revitalized area of Original Aurora, now termed the East End Arts District, to join former and new, like-spirited, artistic neighbors.

Galleries, ethnically diverse restaurants, retailers and organizations dedicated to promoting the arts, especially in typically underserved community segments have welcomed Shadow Theatre with collectively enthusiastic, open arms. In fact, they have initiated a neighborly gathering of forces to spread the word among clients and friends to generate record attendances for their new play , Joe Turner's Come and Gone set to open on October 9 th.

"Being a good neighbor is a priority for Shadow Theatre Company. As we settle into this first full season we want to extend a welcoming offer to our new home to those who reside and work in our area. We want them to experience, firsthand, the quality and variety of shows offered by Shadow.

In Joe Turner's Come and Gone you will encounter the legacy of slavery met head on by the resiliency of black folks to make a way out of no way. While slavery has come and gone we still find ourselves as a people and a culture having to find our way. Shadow Theatre Company for me represents a part of this sacred journey of a people to find their way and to share their story on their own terms." says Jeffrey Nickelson, founder and executive artistic director.

This play deals with a number of issues, including the unseen scars of slavery, the differences between religion and spirituality, the struggles of beginning a new life, and the importance for all Americans to find and understand their own song.
