Continuing its campaign of community service, the volunteer organization Democrats Work helped to feed the homeless in downtown Denver on Wednesday , March 26th. A full crew of a dozen Democrats sporting loud orange and blue t-shirts took their assigned kitchen posts at the Trinity Methodist Church to serve a decent meal to over 200 hungry people. The volunteers were guided by the experienced hands of Capitol Hill Community Services (CHCS) who have been serving the homeless community full-time at various locations for years.
For many of the volunteers it was their first time participating in such an event. Two enthusiastic pre-teenagers were present with a guardian to do community service on spring break.
This event was significant for the burgeoning Democratic organization. So many signed up online to volunteer for the meal that Erin Egan, Colorado Director of Democrats Work, had to turn volunteers away because there weren't enough slots available for the throngs to fulfill. The excitement of the upcoming election and Democratic Convention coming to Denver has many local people looking to get involved in any way that they can. This event was part of Democrats Work's "Ready, Set, CO!" program, which is addressing pressing needs and getting Colorado communities ready for the Convention in August. Upcoming Democrats Work events include tree planting on Earth Day and trash pickups in parks.
You can learn more about how you can help your community at www.democratswork.org where you can sign up to volunteer or organize your own event. With the Convention coming to town, let's get involved, reach out to our neighbors, and do something effective for a change!
