Churches of Scientology Disaster Response Team
Contributed by: Susan Gaut on 6/25/2008

Following the recent tornado disaster in Windsor, Colorado, The Colorado Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) team was deployed to Windsor to assist the residents of nearly 600 homes that were destroyed in the storm. The team provided water, ice and snacks to over a thousand residents and relief workers in the devastated area and hosted an interfaith community cook-out--feeding 350 residents on what would have been their Memorial Day weekend.

The disaster response team was staffed with Scientology Volunteer Ministers, some of whom are C.E.R.T. (Citizen Emergency Response Training) trained or have assisted in other U.S. disasters including the Greensburg, Kansas tornado and Hurricane Katrina. They also provided Assists, simple techniques developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, to help people face the challenges of loss.

For more than twenty-five years Churches of Scientology Disaster Response has brought relief to those devastated by earthquakes, tornados, floods, hurricanes, wild fires etc. CSDR is a member of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. For situations limited to local areas, local Volunteer Ministers provide assistance. The Volunteer Ministers are trained in nineteen areas to help victims of disaster. In the event of larger disaster, volunteers from other areas are mobilized to provide additional personnel. That meal is the only thing those poor people are going to get for free from Scientology. The cult's "volunteer ministers" believe they are doing a service, and that's what's most insidious about Scientology; it takes good, selfless people, and it convinces them that the best way to help is to prey on victims when they're at their weakest. The New York Daily News reported that Scientology "volunteer ministers" worked to keep psychiatric help from students at Virginia Tech in the wake of the shooting there that killed 32 people. Scientology's "disaster response" groups worked deliberately to keep psychiatric help from Ground Zero in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. These are not isolated incidents. They've done this after the 2004 tsunami and the tube bombing in London. The cult's volunteers sincerely want to help. If the cult itself was as sincere, they would tell the members to drop the sales pitch and focus on food and water.

To quote Hubbard: "As the benefits of the Volunteer Minister program begin to spread throughout the society, a rank and file of people that have been helped will begin to accumulate. These people will begin to feed into missions and Churches of Scientology from wherever the Volunteer Minister has been at work." (HCO Policy Letter 22 February 1991, Volunteer Ministers) In other words, prey on the vulnerable.
