Denver Academy students offer a hand up
Contributed by: Bridget O'Toole on 7/1/2008

Seven students and teachers from Denver Academy spent the first week of summer vacation at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota working with the Oglala Lakota Tribe to fix up their homes as part of the "Wawokiye" Project or "groups helping people stand." While on the reservation, students also learn about the story and culture of the Oglala Lakota from homeowners and elders.

The trip is coordinated through an outreach program called Re-Member, which is a non-profit group that has been working with the Oglala Lakota since 1998.

This is the fifth time in three years that Denver Academy has traveled to Pine Ridge. In addition to the summer program, students also spend one week in the spring at the Reservation as part of the Denver Academy's experiential program.

Denver Academy specializes in educating students with unique learning profiles. To learn more about the school, please call 303-777-5870 or visit www.denveracademy.org.
