Not Your Ordinary Yoga Retreat

The Women's Wilderness Institute and The Yoga Workshop Offer Workshops for Women

When you think of a yoga retreat, what comes to mind? Refresh, relax, and rejuvenate? How about completing that picture in your mind with visions of serene desert arches, winding canyons and vast mesas. Think of this retreat as "yogini" meets Backpacker Betty.

The Women's Wilderness Institute and The Yoga Workshop are coming together April 5-8 to bring you a unique experience in The Slickrock Canyons Yoga Retreat, engaging you in four days of yoga, backpacking, hiking and yes, relaxation. You will reconnect to your inner strength both physically ad mentally. The professional field staff from Women's Wilderness will teach outdoor skills, including backcountry travel, navigation, cooking, trip planning and camping while instructors from The Yoga Workshop lead twice-daily yoga sessions.

The out-and-back backpacking itinerary will be tailored to the interests of the group, leaving time for simply enjoying the scenery, or writing and art projects. In fact, participants will also have the option to empower themselves with an overnight "solo", a night spent alone to experience the stillness of the canyons.

The course is tailored to beginning backpackers, so no backpacking or yoga experience is necessary. Tuition of $525 includes all gear, food and instruction. The Slickrock Canyons Yoga Retreat begins and ends in Grand Junction, Colorado.

"Our desert courses have always been popular, especially as a means to rejuvenate and recharge," says Wendy Gruenberg, Women's Wilderness Institute's Marketing Director, "so it seems a natural fit to combine the nourishment of a backpacking trip in the desert with the relaxation of daily yoga practice. The Yoga Workshop brings expertise in discovering and harnessing inner strength through yoga, which is a perfect fit with our mission of strengthening women in the outdoors."

The desert retreat is one of three inspiring Wilderness Yoga Retreats offered by Women's Wilderness and The Yoga Workshop this summer:

April 5-8: Slickrock Yoga Retreat, backpacking in the desert canyons in Utah, $525.

July 20-22: Mountain Lakes Yoga Retreat, backpacking in the SnowyRange, Wyoming, $395.

September 19-23: Green River Yoga Retreat, canoeing on the Green River, Utah, $750.
