Capitol Hill People's Fair Embarks on Multi-year Greening Plan

The CHUN Capitol Hill People's Fair (June 7 & 8, 2008, Civic Center Park) is embarking on a multi-year plan to "green" our festival. The People's Fair is working with the City & County of Denver's "Greenprint Denver" initiative, in conjunction with other major Denver/Colorado Festivals and the Colorado Festivals and Events Association, and encourages our vendors and the general public to help our festival to get GREEN. For the past few months, the producers of the People's Fair have been meeting with producers of the other major Denver festivals, to put together a plan of action, and begin to detail our consistent greening plan for all of the large events.

For 2008, the large event producers outlined four goals to develop our plan. The goals (along with our plans to carry them out) are as follows:

1) Include a consistent recycling message in all appropriate event material:
a. The People's Fair has included the message in our press releases, directory (which will be distributed to our fairgoers onsite at the Fair), and information to all vendors, volunteers, sponsors, and exhibitors in our "Countdown Packets" - mailed out in mid-May with last-minute information for the Fair.

2) Educate vendors as to the need for and use of recyclable products:
a. We are mailing information to our vendors (as stated above) not only with greening ideas for this year, but recommendations for next year - for example - we ask food vendors to please avoid purchasing styrofoam containers. We also suggest that they consider using organic, seasonal, and locally-produced products to minimize gasoline emitted by transporting products long distances.

3) Adding on-site recycling programs at events:
a. The People's Fair has contracted with Time Cleaning, Inc., which will collect trash from trash cans throughout the fairgrounds, as well as recyclable materials from vendors, and sort recyclables from trash for us. They will not only clean the fairgrounds but will help ensure that we recycle as much as possible onsite at the People's Fair.

4) Adding on-site educational display(s):
a. In cooperation with the other events, we have created a "Recycling Education Tent" which will be set up in a high-traffic location at the People's Fair (and the other events) where fairgoers can view our recycle display and talk with vendors from non-profit organizations who will be onsite to explain their message to fairgoers. We created a table-top display which holds common items and shows how long it takes for each item to decompose.

"We look forward to the challenge that greening these enormous events presents," said People's Fair Director, Roger Armstrong. "The People's Fair and many other large events have worked hard to create a consistent message and an organized effort so that the general public can learn and take an active role in greening our environment. We hope our efforts go far beyond our events and have a long lasting impact on people in their everyday lives."
