Jim Jackson, former director of the Martin Luther King Recreation Center and community leader for more than 30 years, as well as many other minorities with blood cancers need your help! They are in desperate need of life-saving stem cell transplants. Stem cells can either be collected through the circulating blood or from a marrow donation, depending on the needs of the patient. Patients who are unable to find a stem cell match within their own family must turn to the National Marrow Donor Registry in hopes of finding a lifesaving match. Yet, the number of registered African American and other minority donors is insufficient. More donors are needed everyday to give patients with blood cancers a better chance at life.
It's not every day you're asked to help save a life!
If you meet the guidelines below, please come to the drive. Join the National Marrow Donor Registry and stand ready to give someone a future - hopefully Jim Jackson. A cheek swab will be taken to determine your tissue type. It's that simple! We hope to see you on Saturday, March 29.
Are You Eligible?
• Be between the ages of 18 and 60
• Be willing to donate to any patient in need
• Meet health guidelines (No HIV, or at risk for HIV, hepatitis, or at risk for hepatitis, most heart diseases, most cancers. Chronic lung disease, autoimmune disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, diabetes requiring insulin or diabetes-related health issues, an organ or marrow transplant, significant obesity)
Due to the small representation of minority donors on the registry, federal funding was put in place to offset donor registration fees. There is however a nominal fee for Caucasians who wish to join the registry.
